From Adversity to Advocacy
37-year-old Johana Mutero faced unimaginable hardship when her husband abandoned the family 7 years ago, leaving her to care for their 3 young children alone. With no job or financial support, Johana was left in despair.
But Johana's story took an inspiring turn when she began working menial jobs in the suburbs of Harare. There, she encountered children with disabilities who were neglected and isolated by their families and society. Moved by their plight, Johana's compassion was ignited. Drawing on her own studies in special education, she resolved to create a school that would provide loving care, quality education, and opportunities for children with disabilities and the underprivileged.
Harvest Age Inclusive Trust was founded in 2021 by Johana Mutero, a determined single mother who experienced firsthand the challenges facing children with disabilities and underprivileged youth in Zimbabwe. After encountering neglected and isolated children in her community, Johana spent years tirelessly fundraising, networking, and planning to turn her vision into a reality.
In 2021, Harvest Age Inclusive Trust opened its doors in Kuwadzana, Harare. Starting with just a handful of students, the school has rapidly grown, now serving over 100 children aged 0-21 with a wide range of disabilities and disadvantages.
At Harvest Age Inclusive Trust, we believe every child deserves access to a high-quality, holistic education that nurtures their unique strengths and needs. That's why we've developed an innovative, whole-child approach to teaching and learning.
Our curriculum is aligned with the national standards, but tailored to the diverse needs and learning styles of our students. We utilize Universal Design for Learning principles to ensure all content and activities are accessible. Our classrooms feature a blend of specialized, small-group instruction and inclusive, collaborative learning experiences.
We equip our classrooms with the latest assistive technologies to empower students of all abilities. This includes augmentative and alternative communication devices, adaptive software, sensory tools, and more. Our staff receive extensive training to integrate these technologies seamlessly into daily lessons.
Beyond the core curriculum, students participate in a wide range of enrichment activities that develop important life skills. This includes computer coding, cooking, gardening, music, art, sports, and more - all facilitated by trained specialists. These hands-on experiences build students' confidence, independence, and community engagement.
By combining specialized instruction, assistive technology, comprehensive therapies, enrichment activities, and strong family partnerships, Harvest Age Inclusive Trust is uniquely positioned to unleash the potential of every child in our care. Our innovative, whole-child approach is transforming lives and challenging societal perceptions of disability.
